Geocache Description:

Not near any grave.

Placed for the Monroe County Bicentennial.

Formerly known as Grove Cemetery and Woodlawn Cemetery. Founded in 1810, it is one of Michigan’s oldest public cemeteries. Its oldest burials are veterans who served in the American Revolutionary War. A notable burial plot belongs to the families of Monroe residents George Armstrong Custer and his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer, although neither are buried here.

Some other notable burials are:

- Austin Eli Wing - Michigan House of Representatives
- David A. Noble - former mayor of Monroe and representative in the US Congress
- George Alford - a minuteman in the American Revolutionary War and the only known Monroe soldier to have served in the Continental Army under the direct command of General George Washington
- George Spalding - American Civil War officer and later a representative in the US Congress
- Heman J. Redfield - former mayor of Monroe and member of the Michigan Senate
- Isaac P. Christiancy - Chief Justice of the Michigan State Supreme Court and member of the US Senate
- James H. Gilmore - former mayor of Monroe
- Jesse Hart Root - federal judge in Michigan and delegate at the 1932 Republican National Convention
- Robert Scott Duncanson - one of the first African American painters to garner international acclaim
- Joseph Rowe Smith Sr. - Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General
- Edwin Willits - US Congressman
