AEG Trail #6: Ghyll Crossing
This is the 6th of a series of 9 caches in an enjoyable 2.6 km circuit taking in some varied scenery and environments to the south of the village. The trail originally had 6 caches marking key points of interest as per the guided tour at the annual Environment Day held in May 2017.
The cache, (now) a camo-taped screw-capped pot, was adopted as AEG Trail5 from Pippy P Poopypants on 31/5/19 with 36 finds, subsequently renumbered to allow for the insertion of a new #4 into the series and also moved to a nearby more suitable location. It is a hidden few meters off the trail and about 15m from the stepping stones.
From #5 the trail continues west for some 250m passing the junction with the trail coming from the south down from Addingham High Moor and crosses a small beck. Turn right (north) here and follow the trail along the eastern edge of the field and down into the woodland toward the beck and stepping stones close to the cache location.
Original text [+ added notes]: one of Addingham's lesser-known hidden beauty spots, this crossing point [over Marchup Ghyll] deep in ancient woodland is on the route of a Roman road leading over Moor Lane to Skipton. [The ghyll, after being joined by Back Beck, becomes Town Beck as it enters the village on the way to joining the Wharfe north-west of Low Mill village].
