In 1884, Maren Christiansen left her home in Norway far behind, setting out to join her brother in Seattle. Traveling alone, the young woman crossed the Atlantic by steamer and traveled west by train across Canada to Vancouver. After a few years, Maren met Martin Mickelson, also a Norwegian immigrant, in Seattle. They married in 1893. In 1901, yearning for a place in the country, they bought 40 acres on the present site of Evergreen Hospital. Their further adventures can be read at the cache site.
