In the early morning hours of July 5, 1919 a World War I bombing aircraft the Handley Page made a crash landing near this area. Locals drove the cars around the race track to show a safe place for the plane to land it ended up over shooting the runway area and tipped up on its nose. Handley Page was making a transatlantic flight from England with its final destination being Greenport New York. The plane was badly damaged and it took the entire summer for parts and maintenance crews to come from England to repair the plane. For local residents this became known as the summer of the Handley Page. The plane also brought the first international airmail into Canada, one of the pilots was Colonel Ernest Stedman who became one of the founding members of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The local Air Cadet Squadron 689 Parrsboro was renamed to 689 Handley Page squadron and proudly wear the name of the Handley Page on their shoulder flash now . From the satellite views on the Internet you can still make out the race track and the reminence of the runway that had been in operation until the late 1990s. From the ground these are barely recognizable as it's all blueberry field now. The cache should be an easy find, please stay on the well use roads and DO NOT touch the farmers blueberries.
