Smeđi medvjed (Ursus arctos) je zvijer iz porodice medvjeda. Ova vrsta ima više podvrsta - između ostalih, to su europski smeđi medvjed (U. a. arctos), grizli (U. a. horribilis) i kodijak (U. a. middendorffi) - koje nastanjuju Euroaziju i Sjevernu Ameriku.
Vjerojatno zbog svoje snage i veličine, medvjedi su od gotovo samih početaka čovjeka pa do sadašnjice zadobili posebno mjesto u njegovu zivotu. Prisutni su u mitovima, kultovima, legendama i bajkama mnogih nadora…, vjerojatno iz istog razloga i ova planina nosi ime Mesvednica, te brojni drugi lokaliteti, kao što su Medvedgrad, potok Medveščak i drugi… fasciniranost covjeka tom zivotinjskom vrstom traje od pretpovijesnog čovjeka koji je štovao kult špiljskog medvjeda, pa do današnjeg modernog čovjeka koji ulaze trud u njihovu zaštitu.

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a beast from a bear family. This species has more subtypes - among others, the European brown bear (U. a. Arctos), the grizzly (U. a. Horribilis) and the codice (U. a. Middendorffi) - inhabited by Eurasia and North America.
Probably because of their strength and size, bears have been from the very beginnings of man to the present and have gained a special place in his life. They are present in myths, cults, legends and fairy tales of many... probably for the same reason this mountain is named after Mesvednica, as well as numerous other localities, such as Medvedgrad, Medvescak stream and others... the fascination of man with that animal species lasts from a prehistoric man who Has been worshiped by a cave bear groom, to today's modern man who makes efforts to protect them.
