Een Meet & Greet exact tijdens volle maan

Datum: 7 augustus 2017

Locatie: op de hoek van de brug

Vroeger was dit een goede tijd van het jaar om op steur te gaan vissen, ze zouden rond deze volle maan makkelijker te vangen zijn. De steur is een enorme vis die wel 6 meter lang kan worden (en 100 jaar oud), dus echt gemakkelijk zal het niet geweest zijn.
Daarnaast ging het al in de 17de eeuw niet zo goed met de steur. Door de bedijking langs de rivieren, veranderde de rivierdelta's van vorm en hadden de steuren geen plek meer om op te groeien. En steuren doen er zo'n 7 tot 20 jaar over om volwassen te worden, dus het had een groot effect op de visstand. Uiteindelijk werd in 1953 de laatste Nederlandse steur gevangen, in de Waal bij Tiel.
Sinds 2012 doet men wel weer een poging om de steur opnieuw te introduceren in de Biesbosch, het Haringvliet en bij Nijmegen.

A Meet & Greet at the exact moment of full moon

This time a year used to be a good time to hunt for sturgeon, and that's how this full moon got the name sturgeon moon.
Used to be... as the sturgeon already declined in the Netherlands during the 17th century, due to the building of dykes along the rivers to prevent flooding. And in 1953 the last Dutch sturgeon was caught. Since 2012 people are trying to reintroduce the sturgeon, not just in the Netherlands, but in Germany and France as well.
