Geocache Description:

Welcome to Peatlands Park Bog Garden

Bogland and peatland is a very common habitat across much of Northern Ireland.

Peat is produced when dead plant material accumulates, very slowly, over time because of waterlogged conditions.  As layer upon layer gathers, the pressure from the weight creates a more consolidated material and this becomes the peat which we value as a fuel source.

The bogland is also an important place for biodiversity, water and carbon storage and areas of outstanding natural beauty, with many plants and animals uniquely suited to this type of environment.

To claim this earthcache you will need to visit all the information boards in the garden area.

(It's best to take the right hand path at the start of the garden ;) )

PLEASE REMEMBER TO STAY ON THE BOARDWALKS AT ALL TIMES FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AND ALSO TO HELP MAINTAIN THE NATURAL DIVERSITY OF THE HABITAT

This is a great cahce for kids to learn about peatland and may be accesible for Wheelchair uses however the boardwalks are only about 3 1/2 - 4 feet wide so may not be suitable for large groups.

1. How old and how deep is this garden?

2. The majority of bogs in Northern Ireland are situated in which 3 areas?

3. Where is the water in the pools derived from?

4. Describe what the picture on the right and side of the 'Bog Moss' Board shows.

5. On the board with the 'Treasure Trail' addition, explain how some plants sustain their growth in this low nutrient area and name the 2 plants shown.

6. Name the 3 birds on the 'Bog Plants and Animals' board.
