Na górze kilkumetrowego postumentu znajduje się orzeł. Obok leżą kamienie, Ogrodzenie składa się z pionowych płyt , na których w zależności od stanu aktualnej wiedzy umieszczono nazwiska lub pseudonimy ponad 650 naszych niezłomnych rodaków, którzy wytrwali do końca na kresowych, straconych posterunkach – płacąc za to najwyższą cenę. Wspólnym, memoratywnym napisem uhonorowano kolejnych 858 Żołnierzy Wyklętych, którzy stracili życie w walce za wolną ojczyznę, a których nazwisk ani pseudonimów nie udało się dotąd ustalić. Łącznie pomnik ten jest hołdem i podziękowaniem ponad 1500 żołnierzom Polski Podziemnej, którzy zginęli na terenach wschodnich od linii Curzona (za tzw. kordonem) w walce z Sowietami po lipcu 1944. Jest pierwszym zbiorowym postumentem upamiętniającym Żołnierzy Wyklętych z Kresów poległych, pomordowanych oraz zamęczonych w łagrach „za kordonem.
Nadmienić należy, że nieprzypadkowo Augustów został wybrany na miejsce upamiętniające Żołnierzy Wyklętych. W lipcu 1945 roku wojska sowieckie otoczyły rejon Puszczy Augustowskiej oraz przylegające do niej tereny powiatu augustowskiego, suwalskiego i część sokólskiego. Oddziały Armii Czerwonej wspomagane przez Urząd Bezpieczeństwa i Ludowe Wojsko Polskie przeprowadziły akcję pacyfikacyjną. Aresztowano kilka tysięcy ludzi, z czego w powiecie augustowskim od 10 do 25 lipca 1945 r. - 1878 osób. Zatrzymywanym stawiano zarzut przynależności do Armii Krajowej lub współpracy z niepodległościową partyzantką . Po brutalnych przesłuchaniach część zatrzymanych osób zwolniono, część skierowano do dalszych przesłuchań, natomiast 600 aresztowanych, wytypowanych przez radziecki kontrwywiad w ostatnich dniach lipca 1945 r. wywieziono w nieznanym kierunku. Ślad o Nich zaginął… Operacja zwana "Obławą Augustowską" do dziś jest przedmiotem badań historyków.
There is an eagle on the top of the pedestal. Next to the stones lies the fence consists of vertical plates, which, depending on the state of current knowledge, were the names or aliases of more than 650 of our staunch compatriots who had stuck to the end of the barracks, lost their jobs - paying the highest price. It should be mentioned that it was not accidentally that Augustów was elected to the place of commemoration of the Exiled Soldiers. In July 1945, Soviet troops surrounded the area of the Augustów Primeval Forest and adjacent areas of the Augustów, Suwałki and Sokółka counties. Red Army units assisted by the Security Office and the People's Army of Poland carried out a pacification operation. Several thousand people were arrested, including 1878 people from August 10th to July 25th, 1945 in the Augustinian district. The detainee was charged with belonging to the Home Army or working with an independent guerrilla. After brutal interrogations some of the detainees were released, some were sent to further hearings, while 600 arrested, selected by Soviet counterintelligence in the last days of July 1945, were taken away in an unknown direction. Trace of them missing ... The operation called "Augustów Fence" to this day is the subject of research by historians.
