Geocache Description:

This is the seventeenth cache in my local bus series and my second one in Nassau County.  Cache is a magnetic nano

The mighty n22 and n22X travel between Hicksville and the165th Street Terminal in Jamaica.  The bus follows West John Street, Prospect Avenue, Westbury Avenue and Hillside Avenue serving the communities of Jamaica, Queens Village, New Hyde Park, Mineola, Carle Place, Westbury and Hicksville.  Transfers can be made to the LIRR at Hicksville, Carle Place and Mineola.  While riding the route, you could  can shop at Roosevelt Field, be treated at Wnthrop Hospital or Creedmore State Hospital and take care of business at the Nassau County Complex. The n22 offers both regular service and limited stop service making just 6 stops between Hicksville and Jamaica.  As with all Nassau buses that cross the New York City line, westbound buses can only discharge passengers in Queens and eastbound buses can only accept passengers in Queens.   The bus is assigned to the Mitchel Field Depot.

As far as I can tell, the original operators of the n22 line started in 1902 as a part of the New York and North Shore Traction company (trolley cars)  In 1907 the company changed names to become to Mineola, Roslyn and Port Washington Traction Company. MRPWTC eventually became the New York and Long Island Traction company (Island Traction) in 1926 under joint ownership by the LIRR and the Interboro Rapid Transit company. .   Island Traction disappeared when buses started to take over the routes primarily by the Schenck Transportation Company based in a stable in Great Neck.  The company soon moved its headquarters to Floral Park.  Schenck controlled about 15 lines in Nassau County including the 'Hillside' line which became the n22. &n22X. The Schenck Transportation Company boasted deep cherry red and jet black livery. But they also broke the law because their buses emitted too much exhaust once they crossed the city line.  By the late 1960's Schenck merged with Bee Line and in 1973 became a part of the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority.  The MSBA became LI Bus and in the last ten years, Nassau County took over the LIB routes and created NICE (Nassau Intercounty Express)  NICE is owned by the county but operated by the TransDev Corp.
