This Geocache was part of the 2017 Oconomowoc Area Historical Tour:
The Battle Creek School, also known as Cobb School, appears to have been the second school in Summit. This school was given for District #4 in 1850, but it actually began its sessions in 1846 in private homes. The old school building was built in 1857 on a small piece of land purchased from the Cobb Family. It cost $300.00 to build the brick structure. It was known as Cobb school until 1896 when the name was changed to Battle Creek School, being named after the creek that runs through the property.
A 1946 action combined the school with Joint District #1, the Summit school, but the last students remained to graduate when the school was closed in 1952. History and picture courtesy of the book "The Summit of Oconomowoc 150 Years of Summit Town" by Barbara & David Barquist.
The original school has been remodeled over the past 120+ years and is a private residence located across the street from the cache.
