I recall Friday the 23rd December 1988 as being a fine sunny summer day. I had been a volunteer member with a Goulburn Bushfire Brigade for a year or two, and was wearing my pager that day, ready to attend a fire call, if required.
In the early afternoon, the pager went off on the fire call tone. Having no indication in those days of what the call was for, I listened in on the CB radio as I headed off to the brigade's station. Apparently there'd been a motor vehicle accident somewhere near Breadalbane, but few details were available at this stage.
Once onboard the firetruck, heading south to Breadalbane, we were given more details of what we were heading to. However, nothing could prepare us for the devastating scene we faced on arrival at this location.
It soon became apparent to me that, rather than staying and assisting at the scene in my firefighter role, it would be much more useful for me to return to Goulburn and attend the Goulburn Base Hospital to perform in my day to day role - that as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department.
