Geocache Description:

THE MEMORIAL

Brightlingsea War Memorial is a Grade II listed Cenotaph with cruciform paths, designed by noted sculptor Richard Reginald Goulden.

GEOLOGY

Granite is a common type of intrusive igneous rock that is granular in texture, with grains large enough to be visible with the unaided eye. It forms from the slow crystallisation of magma below the Earth’s surface.

Granite is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar with minor amounts of mica, amphiboles and other minerals.

This mineral composition usually gives granite a white, pink or grey colour with dark mineral grains throughout the rock.

The minerals that make up the granite determines the colour of the granite.

QUARTZ - grey, white, glassy

FELDSPAR - typically off-white, opaque

POTASSIUM FELDSPAR - typically salmon pink, opaque

MICA - black

AMPHIBOLE - black/dark green

The combination of the minerals above make up most of the colours we typically see in granite.
