UPDATE: UPDATE: UPDATE: There's an "open air" Beach Boys concert in the same location that I had planned the original event, so we're moving it to make it more easily accessible. See updated coordinates below: Actual coordinates of the updated location are N41 48.816 W71 23.302 in a parking lot off Veteran's Memorial Parkway overlooking the bike path. Immediately following the event, the East Providence Police department comes out to participate in the "Goodnight Lights" community event - it's a pretty impressive sight to see. I'll message everyone who has logged a "will attend" individually to inform them of the location change. Where: Updated to parking lot off of Veteran's Memorial Parkway, East Providence RI When: Wednesday, August 9, 2017 What Time: 7:30 pm-8:30 pm The details: Good Night Lights is a local tradition that began with a simple gesture: Long-time hospital resident and cartoonist Steve Brosnihan wanted to wish the children of Hasbro Children's Hospital a good night as he rode home on his bicycle after an evening at the hospital. From a spot near India Point Park, Steve paused to illuminate the headlight of his bicycle toward the hospital's awaiting patients. After realizing that the gesture was a really neat way of letting hospital patients know that someone is thinking about them, Steve began recruiting local businesses to participate. Since then, restaurants, hotels, universities, police departments, and an assisted living community have joined in at 8:30 p.m. each night, making "Good Night Lights" one of areas fastest-growing traditions. Since Good Night Lights began, hospital patients have embraced the tradition and gather by the windows of Hasbro Children's Hospital to flash their room lights back at the city of Providence and neighboring East Providence. Everyone is invited to participate in this special tradition! Other information: No one attending this event is under any obligation participate in Good Night lights, however, if you would like to stay to join this community event, please bring your own flashlight. The backstory: Our caching friend, Bearded Beast, thought it would be fun to hold 31 Events of August, a month filled with daily events all within the nations smallest state.
