
Il primo monumento verde nella storia d'Italia, sottoposto a tutela perché ritenuto "di particolare interesse pubblico"
Questa imponente quercia, una roverella per la precisione, ha circa trecentosettanta anni, una circonferenza del tronco che raggiunge i cinque metri ed un altezza della chioma che arriva ad oltre 22 metri.
La sua magica ombra raggiunge i 35 metri di diametro. Il suo nome deriva dalle gazze, che in Toscana vengono appunto chiamate checche o cecche, e che spesso nidificano tra i suoi maestosi e rugosi rami.
Un' antica leggenda narra che sotto la sua chioma si riunissero le streghe durante i sabba. Con il susseguirsi di queste "piccanti feste" , le streghe hanno dato ai rami l’aspetto nodoso e contorto che vediamo. Quel che è certo è che la grande quercia ha avuto una particolare importanza durante la Resistenza, quando diversi gruppi di partigiani lo usarono come nascondiglio per le armi. Abbracciatela, toccatela, fotografatela e rispettatela ma non arrampicatevi sopra di lei. Vi regalerà una sensazione unica.
