Geocache Description:

Korrelocking Nature Reserve

Korrelocking Nature Reserve is an important piece of remnant woodland in the Wheatbelt, one of the most heavily cleared bioregions in Australia. This Reserve features three habitats - Salmon gum and gimlet woodland, York gum / jam gum woodland and swampland with melaleuca thicket.

Take the 2km 30-minute return Woodland Walk and discover this landscape.  The outcrops in the Reserve are made of granite, which formed when melted rock (or magma) cooled deep in Earth’s crust over a long period of time.

You might see holes or pools of water on some of the outcrops. These are called gnammas, the Noongar word for these eroded holes. Gnammas typically have flat bottoms and some have overhanging edges.  Rainwater pools in these holes, which provides drinking water for animals and even tiny habitats for water bugs. In times past, gnammas were a vital source of water for Aboriginal people.

This site is part of the Wheatbelt Science Trail and GeoTrail, you can find more information or other sites of interest across the region on the map.
