Sandalwood

The Shire of Mt Marshall officially became known as the Sandalwood Shire in February 2007. As early as 1870 pastoralists pulled sandalwood to supplement their income. It was the major export from Western Australia until the gold discoveries of the 1890s.

Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) grows well in the Wodjil soils found here, which are marginally productive for agriculture. It is one of four species of the family Santalaceae to occur in Western Australia. The parasitic small tree establishes on the roots of host trees such as raspberry jam (Acacia acuminata).

You can visit the restored dray in Bencubbin and see a Sandalwood plantation nearby.

This site is part of the Wheatbelt Science Trail and GeoTrail, you can find more information or other sites of interest across the region on the map.
