New Norcia Deep Space Ground Station
Rising out of the surrounding landscape, the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Deep Space Station (DSA-1) near New Norcia provides routine support to spacecraft and can spot rockets as they race out of the atmosphere. It allows scientific data from spacecraft hundreds of millions of kilometres away to be collected and safely transmitted back to earth
DSA-1 is connected to the world. The station is remotely operated from Germany with additional on-site support as needed. It also forms part of a global network of stations. Combining the signals from two or more stations is called arraying. By working with Cerebros (DSA-2) in Spain and Malargüe (DSA-3) in Argentina it can provide continuous coverage for ESA missions regardless of the Earth's rotation.
This site is part of the Wheatbelt Science Trail and GeoTrail, you can find more information or other sites of interest across the region on the map.
