Geocache Description:

Taarblin Lake

It’s hard to imagine but Taarblin Lake was once an inland freshwater lake similar to the adjacent Toolibin Lake. Most of the lakebed vegetation here died in the 1950s but there is still plenty of life to be found. Find more sites of interest across the region on the Wheatbelt Science Trail.

Taarblin Lake remains an important place to rest and feed and over 35 bird species have been recorded here. The lake is generally considered no longer suitable for waterbirds to breed in, but during large fill events water birds quickly make use of the favourable conditions. During the large 2017 rainfall event ducks were observed breeding on the lake.

As part of an engineering solution to save nearby Toolibin Lake a separator gate was installed there. It can be opened or closed depending on conditions. When opened it diverts saline surface water to Taarblin Lake as it is already highly salt affected; Taarblin Lake plays an important role halting the decline of adjacent Toolibin Lake.

This site is part of the Wheatbelt Science Trail and GeoTrail, you can find more information or other sites of interest across the region on the map.
