Geocache Description:

One of a series of ‘caches placed on a five mile circular route which may be started from either Airton or Kirkby Malham, but also the first of the series placed on, or near to, the road from Airton to Settle (Cycle Route 68), or the last if starting from Settle!

We have come to rely on SatNavs but not necessarily to trust them; and with good cause!  Back Lane, in Airton, is a case in point.  Having come to live in Airton 40 years ago (long before SatNavs snuck into our lives), I have a very good knowledge of all the highways & byways in the village and (being a relic of the pre-SatNav age), a good understanding of maps & map reading.  So I know that Back Lane is a bridleway, even if my in-car SatNav doesn’t!  Every time I set off to, or return from, Settle my car’s SatNav instructs me to turn down Back Lane; and every time, I refuse to obey this insane instruction.  I hope you do too!

So I strongly recommend that you walk to this cache and discover for yourself why attempting to drive along Back Lane, Airton, is a bad idea!

Please replace the cache container upside down to keep the log dry.
