Umbrella Rock is a geological formation located in Elk County, Pennsylvania on Gamelands 44. There is an abandoned rail bed that once belonged to the Philadelphia/Erie Railroad that has been converted to a rail to trails and makes for the easiest hike to the "Umbrella".
The Pottsville conglomerate, part of the Pocono Formation, located on Boone Mountain anticline at an elevation of 2,120 feet is composed of heavy conglomerate float blocks. Much of this area is composed of massive sandstone blocks of medium grained to coarse grained composure. The sandstone conglomerate is a coarse-grained sedimentary rock, composed of rounded to sub-angular fragments containing fine-grained particles in the interstices, and commonly cemented by calcium carbonate, iron oxide, silica, or hardened clay.
"Umbrella Rock" was formed from the effects of wind and water weatherizing over millions of years. The bedding created by the weathering process is variable in depth from a few inches to several feet while the majority of the sandstone body remains intact as huge massive blocks.
