An East Side Hide - Old Main Traditional Cache

The Fox River runs through the "center" of Elgin. For locals, this "dividing line" has created an East Vs. West sort of undercurrent. While the west side is ever expanding, the east side can hold its own when it comes to the roots of Elgin, even while looking to the future. So, here are some East Side points of interest. As always, bring your own pen and tweezers.

Old Main - Still on the Elgin Academy Campus, it is now the home of the Elgin History Museum. This building opened in 1856 as the original Elgin Academy, a private school. Be sure to wander to the door and read the plaque and look at the outside exhibits. And while Old Main has its own Greek revival design, take notice of the Sears Gallery across the side street. Built in 1924, its frieze across the top is a replica of the frieze on the Parthenon in Athens. Ancient history on Elgin's East Side. Who knew? (Don't go past the Sears Gallery building. It is private school property).
