Hvordan kunne man tidligere sende viktige meldinger over lange avstander?

Det var jo begresent hvor raskt man kunne bevege seg til fots eller med hest. Brevduer var et alternativ, men det var behov for noe som var raskere. I 1792 løste den franske ingeniøren Claude Chappe problemet med en oppfinnelse som ble kjent som "Semafor Telegraf" eller "Optisk Telegraf". På høyder i terrenget ble det bygd noe som lignet på vindmøller som ble utstyrt stor påle. På denne var det montert en stang med to armer. Ved hjelp av sveiver og taljer kunne disse armene stilles inn i 192 ulike posisjoner.Tårnene ble bygd slik at de alltid kunne se det neste tårnet. En beskjed fra Paris kunne nå alle landets grenser på mindre enn en time.

How could you send important messages over long distances?

It was limited how fast you could travel on foot or by horse. Homing pidgeons was an option but there was a need for something that was faster. In 1792, French engineer Claude Chappe solved the problem with an invention known as "Semaphore Telegraph" or "Optical Telegraph". On heights of the terrain, something similar to windmills were fitted with a large pole. A beam across had two arms which with the help of cranks and handles, these arms could be placed in 192 different positions. The towers were built so that they could always see the next tower. A message from Paris could reach all the country's borders in less than an hour.

Nå ville jo ikke viktige og hemmelige meldinger bli sendt i klartekst. Jeg har tatt utgangspunkt i franskmannen Blaise de Vigenère sin kode som ble utviklert på slutten av 1500-tallet. Denne finnes i mange variasjoner og ble lenge brukt. En grei beskrivelse av hvordan denne brukes finnes her: Vigenèrechifferet. Vil man gjøre det litt enklere finnes det online programmer som koder og dekoder, som for eksempel vigenere-cipher. Kodenøkkelen som du trenger for å løse denne oppgaven er: CHAPPE.

Now, important and secret messages would not be sent in plain text. I have taken the Frenchman Blaise de Vigenère's code, which was developed at the end of the 16th century. This is found in many variations and was used for a long period of time. A clear description of how this is used can be found here: The Vigenère Cipher. If you want to make it a little easier, there are online programs that code and decode, such as vigenere-cipher. The code key that you need to solve this task is: CHAPPE.

OBS!!! Chappe sitt system brukte ikke bokstaven J - derfor blir I brukt som både I og J. Dersom noe blir uforståelig - bytt om på disse bokstavene.

ATTENTION !!! Chappe's system did not use the letter J - therefore I is used as both I and J. If something becomes incomprehensible - replace these letters.
