Geocache Description:

This Treerific Geocache Series highlights London's trees and forests ecosystems! The London Plane-Tree (Plantanus x acerifolia) are hardy hybrid trees that are popular as city park and street trees because of their tolerance of urban conditions and belong to the sycamore tree family. If species trees had birth certificates, the American sycamore name would be listed as one of the parents, while the oriental planetree, native to the eastern Mediterranean, would be listed as the other. Like an aging grandmother trying to keep track of all her grandchildren’s names, the London planetree’s cousins, the sycamores, are often mistakenly called planetrees. The London planetree is also sometimes mistaken for a maple, as their leaves are similar in shape, even though they are not actually related. While they have a complicated family tree, the London planetrees are unique additions to the Carolinian neighborhood ecosystem
