'This Treerific Geocache Series highlights London's trees and forest ecosystems!
The Red Oak (Quercus rubra) is a native tree common in eastern Canada and is a member of the red oak group. This means that the lobes of the leaves are pointed, and high in lignin, which resists decomposition, making it less ideal for compost and creating blankets of undead leaves. The wood of the red oak has long been valued for its beauty in furniture and flooring, and is even used for making barrels to store liquid. The acorns from oaks are a great source of food for livestock and wildlife.
