Geocache Description:

This is the eighteenth in my local bus routes series and my third one in Nassau County.  Cache is a magnetic nano.

The mighty n48 runs from the Hempstead Transit Center to the Hicksville LIRR station.  It services the villages of Hicksville, East Meadow, Westbury,Salsbury, Uniondale and Hempstead.  It travels through the Duffy Avenue industrial area and down Carman Road to Front Street.  There is no Sunday service provided.  Along the way you can shop to your heart's content as it passes many malls and the Nassau Candy Company.  Frolic in Eisenhower Park, visit someone at the Nassau County Jail or the Nassau University Medical Center.  The line also services the company where my plastic hoofs are serviced.  The n48 had service between the  Broadway Mall and Jericho Quad until it was discontinued on April 9, 2017.  The line is serviced by the Mitchell Field bus depot.

The line was estblished by the New York & Long Island Traction company in the early 1920's.  NYLIT became Hempstead Bus Corporation in 1926.  Hempstead Bus had 'stylish red and beige livery' starting in 1949.  Hempstead Bus contuinued to operate it until 1973 when all private operators were taken over by the Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority.  This later became the LI Bus Authority and is today run by Nassau County as a part of its NICE transit.  Lower case 'n's are used on all NICE bus routes.
