In this particular area of Xaghra in 1814 one of the farmhouses was used as a plague hospital. It is thought that the plague was carried to Xaghra in a headdress from a plague stricken house in Malta. Xaghra was isolated and due to the precautions taken and the work of a British Doctor, Dr McAdam, the rest of Gozo was saved from the plague. 104 people died in total, including Dr Mc Adam and the parish priest Dun Vincenz Cauchi.
