Geocache Description:

Usual 35mm film pot with log

There are lots of possible hiding places around the immediate area, but the cache needed to be placed somewhere that was reasonably safe as the road is narrow but at times very busy. This also means that if you come by car you need to think carefully where to park. There is an area to the west of the GZ, but beware, go too far off the road and you will end up in an old pond! Perhaps better to walk?

Little Armshoe hamlet is a scatter of houses, a farm, and at the crossroads with the London Road, the attractive old Forge House. It is somewhat odd that there is a City of London boundary marker on the corner. Why I have no idea, but it is a colourful addition. The hamlet lies on the course of the brook that runs from Knebworth through to St Ibbs Lake and then becomes the St Ipollyts Brook. The water flow is interupted around the area of the Royal Oak/Rusty Gun where it runs into a sinkhole and courses under the hills to the left of the road coming from Hitchin direction. These mark the most southerly limit of the glaciation of the last Ice Age, and are part of the terminal moraine. The stream returns to the surface intermittently in the grounds of Little Armshoe House and then again at the top of St Ibbs Lake.

What of the cache? A simple find, and there are a number of last posts in the area. This one seems to be the last post on the north of the road, and the safest place to put it. There are lots of last posts on the other side that prevent cars ending up in the village pond. Currently a bit stingey, and hopefully well enough hidden to prevent it being casually found. Beause of the traffic this is not a young child friendly cache.
