Geocache Description:

This is a CHALLENGE Cache. The Cache IS at the Posted Coordinates but you MUST complete the challenge before logging a find.

This is a challenge - it is not meant to be easy. This challenge is not going to be for all cachers - but then again, that's why its called a challenge!

This is a series of challenge caches along Fairfax County's Cross County Trail.

To log this cache, you must find 7 states that you have found that are connected by finds in counties in the USA.

7 STATE - CONTIGUOUS COUNTY CHALLENGE

As geocachers, we love accomplishments. Challenge Caches give us that goal to achieve. Before you lies The Challenge Cache Trail. There are caches for the newbies and veterans out here but this is no power trail.

The Challenge

To qualify for and be able to log a find on this challenge cache you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must have find caches in 7 states that you have found that are connected by finds in counties in the USA.

By connecting the dots for county finds from one state to another, you have a contiguous line of adjacent counties with finds that connect 7 states together.

ABOUT ADJACENT COUNTIES:

  • Adjacent counties are those, which share a land border with the next county in your string. Counties, which meet solely corner to corner, are NOT adjacent. (However if there is some stretch of common border they are adjacent even if there is not a road along that stretch.)
  • Counties separated by a river are considered adjacent, even though there is not a bridge across the river between the counties.(i.e. Counties in Ohio are considered adjacent to the corresponding counties directly across the river in Kentucky).
  • Counties separated by a Great Lake, Ocean Inlets, Gulfs, major Bays, Sounds, etc are NOT considered adjacent. For example the counties of Wisconsin are not adjacent to the counties of lower Michigan (separated by Lake Michigan).Similarly Connecticut counties are not adjacent to Long Island NY (separated by Long Island Sound). Another example would be Huron County on the thumb of Michigan, is not adjacent to Arenac County on the mitten (Separated by Saginaw Bay).
  • An exception to the above rule would be Emmet County MI in the lower peninsula IS considered adjacent to Mackinac County MI in the upper peninsula. (Connected across the straits of Mackinac by the Mackinaw Bridge.),
  • Similarly San Francisco County IS considered adjacent to Alameda County and Marin Counties (Connected by the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges.
  • Hawaii counties are NOT adjacent to ANYTHING, even each other, so don’t even ask!

Rules for the challenge caches in this series:
  1. As with all caches, the decision as to whether a log is valid rests solely with the cache owner.
  2. We have provided a verification tool. It might not be perfect and is therefore not the final authority (see #1).
  3. You may sign the log before completing the challenge. If you have do this, please use a "Write note" log to record your find and then a "Found it" log once you have completed the challenge.
  4. Your log does not need to contain enough information to prove you have met the challenge - that can be determined from the Project-GC checker. I suggest you use the verification checker on this cache page to prove you have met the challenge. Please do not provide the entire output of the checker as it can sometimes be quite verbose.
  5. I may double-check your qualifications with the Project-GC checker after you have logged your find.
  6. Any finds that do not qualify for this challenge or lack a signature on logsheet will be deleted without notice.

ABOUT THE CROSS COUNTY TRAIL:

This cache is not on the trail but is easy to access from the the Cross County Trail (CCT). There are over 50 caches along the 40 mile trail. This is no power trail as many of the hides are different in type, size, difficulty and terrain. If you want to know where to park or get food or a bathroom along the trail you need to check out CCT (CCT - Welcome to the Cross County Trail). It is loaded with valuable information including maps of the entire CCT.

Permission for the placement of this cache has been given by the Reston Association Parks & Recreation Department

Night caching not allowed.
