Geocache Description:

This program is part of World War I and America, a two-year national initiative of The Library of America presented in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, and other organizations, with generous support from The National Endowment for the Humanities.

Pvt. William Bunke was one of 60 Libertytown men to serve in World War I, but the only one to die in the war. He was killed just three weeks before the armistice. Because Mr. Bunke loved Christmas, the people of Libertytown chipped in and paid for the grotto and creche in his memory. The grotto was built from local field stone and has been on display along with the the nativity for over 70 years. Its figurines, most of which are original pieces, were imported from Belgium. (excerpted from article in The News Post Leader, November 13, 1991)

FIELD PUZZLE:

N 39° 29.2AB W 077° 14.CDE

C = Number of letters in first word on plaque

D = Number of words on the third line of the plaque

E = Number of letters in the month William Bunke was killed.

Check sum: AB+C+D+E = 37
