Geocache Description:

This earth cache leads you to a speciality in Istria, Croatia. Istria is influenced by several winds which come from different directions. These winds create unique water currents in the Adriatic sea which cause erosion on the sea rocks. Discover the unique water currents in Istria with this earthcache!

Discover the water currents of Istria and find out how the fascinating rock formations on the sea ground have been created.

This earth cache can only be reached by swimming or by boat. You do this earthcache on your own risk. Diving or snorkeling equipment is necessary to answer the questions. From the land side you must go through a nudism camp ground. Please be aware of that. When you arrive by boat, you need to swim the last meters to the cache coordinates. There may be jetskis, please be careful.

 

Sea water currents are horizontal and vertical transports of water in the world seas. Sea water currents can be caused by several currents: earth rotation, salt level, water temperatures and winds.

Erosion in geology is the action of surface processes (such as water flow or wind) that remove soil, rock or dissolved material from the Earth’s crust. In the case of sea currents it is erosion caused by water which is moved by wind. Besides the sea current also waves are created by moving water.

In Istria, winds are mainly influencing the water temperatures, therefore the sea currents are strong. The results of the sea currents are well visible and are ideal for exploring erosion. As the winds are the most important factor when sea currents are created in Istria, you can explore the unique combination of three winds in the region:

The Bora
Strong and squally wind, east-northeast
Cold wind, mostly in winter time

The Mistral
Very strong wind, west-northwest
Depression vortex, which originates above Italy by cold northern air from the Alps and warm Mediterranean air, can blow for weeks

The Jugo
Strong and hot south-southeast wind
Dry and with a lot of sand
Contains salt as it takes humidity above the Mediterranean sea

In different parts of Istria, the winds are differently strong.

The winds move the water at the surface of the sea. If the wind blows for a longer time, a water current occurs in the sea which goes in the same direction as the wind direction. The permanent water movement cause erosion on the rocks at the sea floor. Sea current channels originate.

Dieser Earthcache ist nur schwimmend vom Ufer oder per Boot zu erreichen. Du machst diesen Earthcache auf eigene Gefahr! Tauch- oder Schnorchelausrüstung ist notwendig, um die Fragen zu beantworten Wenn du von der Kueste aus zu den Koordinaten schwimmen moechtest, musst du durch einen FKK-Campingplatz gehen. Bitte beachte dies! Wenn du vom Meer aus kommst, musst du die letzten Meter zum Cache schwimmen. Bitte achte auf Jetskis und andere Boote.

 

Als Meeresströmungen bezeichnet man die waagrechten und senkrechten Transporte von Wassermassen in den Weltmeeren. Meeresströmungen können durch verschiedene Faktoren ausgelöst werden: Erdrotation, Salzgehalt, Wassertemperaturen und Winde.

Erosion in der Geologie ist die Abtragung von Gesteinen oder Sedimenten durch Wind, Wasser, Wetter, physischen oder chemischen Prozessen. Im Fall der Meeresströmungen ist es Erosion durch Wasser, das durch Wind bewegt wird. Neben der Meeresströmungen entstehen durch bewegtes Wasser auch Wellen die Erosion verstärken.

In Istrien beeinflussen die Winde sehr stark die Wassertemperaturen, deshalb sind die Meeresströmungen sehr stark. Die Folgen der Meeresströmungen sind gut sichtbar und sind ideal zur Erforschung von Erosion. Da die Winde der wichtigste Faktor bei der Entstehung von Meeresströmungen in Istrien sind, werfen wir einen Blick auf die einzigartige Kombination von drei Winden in der Region:

 

Die Bora
Starker, böiger Ost-Nordostwind.
Kalter Wind, meistens im Winter

Der Mistral
Sehr starker West-Nordwestwind
Tiefdruckwirbel, der über Italien entsteht und von kalter Nordluft aus den Alpen und warmer Mittelmeerluft entsteht, kann wochenlang wehen

Der Jugo
Starker, heißer Süd-Südostwind
Trocken und mit viel Sand
Enthält viel Salz, da er über dem Mittelmeer Feuchtigkeit aufnimmt

In unterschiedlichen Teilen Istriens sind die Winde unterschiedlich stark.

Die Winde bewegen das Wasser an der Oberfläche des Meeres. Wehen Sie längere Zeit, entsteht eine Wasserströmung im Meer, die in die gleiche Richtung zeigt, wie die Windrichtung. Durch permanente Wasserbewegung wird der Gesteinsboden am Meer erodiert. Sogenannte Strömungskanäle entstehen am Meeresboden.
