A fun and easy Cache nestled along the West Fork of the Gallatin River near the entrance to Big Sky, Montana.
Start the search by turning West at the stoplight onto Lone Mountain Trail from HWY 191. Pass the gas station, but don't go far... Turn right immediately after the first small bridge and drive down to the small dirt parking area alongside the West Fork creek.
From there, you're looking for a small wooded area. No need for a long walk, but be brave and wander into the darkest section of nearby trees and bushes. Open the top part first.
Enjoy the sights and sounds of the West Fork Creek as it flows by this cache just a short way above it's confluence with the Gallatin River.
This area was frequently inhabited by band of Native American called the Tukudeka or "Mountain Sheepeaters" which is part of the Shoshone Tribe. The Sheepeaters were rugged and innovative people that were able to thrive in these harsh mountains year round. The Sheepeaters and other Native American Tribes have lived or traveled through this area for over 10,000 years.
The nearby stream (The West Fork) is formed from many smaller creeks that are fed by mountain snowmelt high in the Spanish Peaks and Madison Mountain Range. The West Fork is one of the Gallatin River's primary tributaries and is full of Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout. Keep an eye out for wildlife including Elk and the local Big Horn Sheep that frequent the hillside.
