In 2017 Alberta 4-H is celebrating 100 years of “Learn to do by Doing.” This series of caches was set up to be a part of the legacy of the first 100 years which is being capped off by a 4-H Fever celebrations in Olds.
In 1923 there was a competition for the best oral statement on how the members raised their hogs. From there members began to learn demonstrations and in 1959 public speaking became a regular activity and there were even two regional competitions that year. In 1977 the first provincial public speaking competition was held (in 2003 the first provincial presentations competition was held). While it can be very scary starting out, members gain confidence in their speaking abilities and are often sought after for these and many other skills (ie. How to run a meeting) that 4-H has taught them as they enter their careers. The communications activity is an important part of the 4-H program and developing the skills of the members. Members will also enhance their skills by participating in the multi-juding and consumer decision making where they have to rank 4 items (or animals) and give reasons (oral or written) to compare the items and explain why they have placed them that way. These competitions also have a provincial level and the opportunity to win trips to Denver to compete.
When members recite the 4-H pledge they refer to helping their community (I pledge my hands to larger service). So each year every 4-H’er completes community service as part of their year. Clubs will support their community in many ways and members learn the joy in helping better the communities they live in. Members will also participate in Hiway cleanup on the first Saturday in May (which is not part of their community service) to help keep their communities clean. After doing Hiway cleanup you will be hard pressed to find a 4-H member who litters.
