July 28, 1977 marks 40 years since Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) was officially opened by the Queen. Her Majesty opened the hospital - then known as University Hospital Nottingham Queen's Medical Centre - on , during a visit to Nottingham as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of the UK.
The history of the Queen's Medical Centre - July 27, 1964 An announcement was made in the House of Commons revealing that a new medical school would be established in Nottingham together with a new district hospital with capacity for 1,200 patients.
May 24, 1971 The first pile was driven on the Clifton Boulevard site, marking the beginning of the building of the Medical School and the hospital's West Block.
July 28, 1977 The Queen officially opened the QMC. July 27, 1978 The QMC's League of Friends is established. August to November, 1978 Outpatient clinics at Nottingham General Hospital and the Eye Hospital move to QMC.
November 11, 1978 The Children's Hospital - and the children's emergency department - moved from its previous site on Chestnut Grove to QMC. July 22, 1979 The emergency department transferred from Nottingham General Hospital to the QMC. November 1981 The Women's Hospital moved to the QMC from Peel Street. January 8, 1989 The QMC treats 49 victims of the Kegworth air disaster. Prince Charles visited victims three days later.
April 2006 The hospitals trusts of Nottingham City Hospital and the QMC merge to become Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, with Peter Homa as chief executive.
June 2008 Nottingham Children's Hospital is established at QMC. April 2012 The East Midlands Major Trauma Centre is established. August 25, 2015 Nottingham's tram network expanded and QMC became the first hospital in the UK to have its own dedicated tram stop.
July 28, 2017 The QMC turns 40.
