In 1663, Mohegan leader Sachem Unca sold a parcel of the tribe's land, known as "Nile Mile Square" to English colonists for 70 pounds of silver. The property would later become known as Norwich. In later years, the towns of Bozrah, Franklin, Ledyard, Lisbon, and Preston each seceded. This marker is on the corner of Lake Rd and Witter Rd. It was erected on August 6, 2017 by the "Guns of Norwich Historical Society". It reads Nine Mile Square SW Corner in Lake. The actual sw corner of the original land sale is actually located in the middle of the man made Gardner Lake. The stone has the coords of the sw corner which we added as a waypoint. This piece of granite also is a piece of history. It was removed from the home of former governor John Samuels Peters (1772-1858) in Hebron.
