Erosion on the coastal bluffs along the South end of San Juan Island threatened the primary access road through American Camp and out to Cattle Point. After several years of reviewing and debating options for moving the road higher up Mt. Finlayson and away from the eroding cliff, a design was agreed upon and construction was undertaken.
The Cattle Point Road Realignment Project was completed in the Fall of 2015, and with the new road we got a new scenic pull-out! At the current rate of erosion, the current road is expected to be safe for at least the next 100+ years. You can still see the outline of the old road if you look closely towards the cliff edge.
