Baseball has always been popular in the Bend Area, but no game catches the imagination more than one played in 1910.

During the erly 20th century, professional baseball teams would travel the region and practice against local baseball teams. This provided not only a way to test their players, but an insane amount of good publicity. The team to frequently visit our area was the Cincinnati Reds.

As for the game in 1910, the Reds came to Hartford and played the local team, known as the Hartford City Bluse. On the team were Lem Ruttencutter, George Lerner, Harry Gibbs, Charles Kell, Joseph Pierce, Avalene "Lee" Moore, Frank Chapman, Mitt Wayland, Ira Fields, and Charles "Ricky-Ticky" Fields.  there was also another player who remains unidentified. the game was held at the town's baseball field, behind what is currently the community center. At the time, the entire creek basin was clear and mostly level. Other than that, the only thing we know for sure is that the Hartford team won! Descendants of the team say that it was by a score of 5-4, but this is yet to be verified.

The next year, the Reds returned to Hartford with the intention of getting revenge, and revenge they got. In the tribune telegraph, they noted that, "Hartford won last year, but were easily defeated the year by a score of 5-1." This game was also held in Syracuse, due to flooding which covered the baseball field in Hartford.

Information from Mildred Chapman Gibbs' Hartford City, 1853-1922 and Doug Owens, a descendant of Lee More.  Privided by the Mason County Historical and Preservation Society, which can be foun on Facebook
