What is it about girls and horses? When I was young, I wished for a horse. I pretended that my purple Schwinn Fair Lady was a horse named Princess. My friend and I would ride our two-wheeled horses up and down the sidewalk, galloping with manes, or handlebar tassels, blowing in the wind.
That wish for a horse was eventually granted in the form of a best friend with a horse named Flicka. We cleaned out her stall, cleaned her hooves, curry-combed her and, finally, rode her on the Palos Verdes trails under the summer sun. My friend rode Flicka in barrel racing competitions and won a couple of ribbons!
Today, I still love horses but my contact is limited to collecting manure for my garden. My husband remarks that, while I am afraid of dogs, I have no problem approaching and talking to the horses at the stable. Well, with faces and eyes like theirs, how can I resist?
So, here is my love letter to horses - their beauty, intelligence, companionship, service, speed. Saddle up! Thanks to King Charles & The Flying Dutchmen for sharing their idea.
