Another day at State Library looking up Forgotten Australians. And what an extra special day today turned out to be. You see, I'm a Leo, and I love adventure, which is why I geocache. So I thought I would research that name for a cache. I picked up those well thumbed volumes of the Australian Dictionary of Biography. I looked up Leo Weiser Port. I also considered Leo Fink. But what struck my eye was Leo Ejner Jensen. Professional wrestler. I started to make some notes, when suddenly, I was placed in a head lock. My assailant said "Be a jolly good fellow and back off" . Luckily, the librarian disturbed him, and as he leaped over the ropes, a piece of paper fell out his trunks. There was a list on the paper, which said:
Edward Eyre
William Henry Lempriere
Charles Collier Perkins
Alan McLeod McCulloch
Elzio Bini
Meet at Gilbert Barry Park tonight
What was a keen geocacher to do? As I ventured towards the park, I noticed a crowd of people with funny hats. One was holding a staff. It sounded like they were chanting. Luckily they were holding candles, because I could slowly make out in the darkness who was there. I saw Tom Smith AO from Henson Park there. Also Leonardo Da Vinci from Marrickville Oval was watching, but not participating and eating what looked like herring. Leo Ejner Jensen was there too, but it looked like he was walking away down a garden path and away from the group. Even John Lazar from Wentworth Park was there, but he was chasing a couple of loose gooses. Madam Fibonacci from Cooks River was talking about furphys. Maybe they had been thrown out by that secret society to hide the existence of geocaches after being exposed in my other caches. Maybe it wasn't their turn. I crept closer trying to get a better peek at the ensemble. There was Tom Hanks, John Candy, Shirley Temple, R Lee Ermey, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Emily Osment, and Al Pacino, all there. They were surrounding all the people on the list. Leonardo and Tom must have seen me, because as I crept closer, there was a huge cry of surprise from those in the darkness. I stumbled. I ran away. I sprinted (which isn't very fast for me). I stopped. What was happening? I heard my name. They were crying out my geocaching name! Was this a trap? Had they turned the tables on me and found out my secret geocaching identity. More chanting, but definitely my name. Stevie Wonder came up and handed me a key and gave me a junior crown. I couldn't believe the present situation. I was being inducted into their secret society. I just couldn't refrain from joining in.
The candles went out. I woke up. I still hear it every time I go to sleep. But how does it goes? I know there were no spaces, no warm July, or some ebony and ivory? I wish I could remember, I might get invited back to that gathering next year.
