The beautiful village of Anatoli definitely needed a cache, so where better to place it than on Estavromenos, the mountain towering over the village? The peak offers magnificent views towards Ierapetra, Mount Dikti and Mirambello Gulf. Close to the present day chapel adorning the top was once a Minoan peak sanctuary, where in recent excavations little god-figures and animal figurines have been found. The Minoans definitely knew where to worship their gods!
Estavromenos can be approached either by foot, by bike, of by off-road-capable car. As the road and the hiking path intersect at several points, you could also choose to combine driving/cycling and walking.
If you decide to walk up to Estavromenos, prepare yourself well. Take enough water with you, wear good walking shoes. No mountaineering equipment or skills necessary, though. It will take you a good 60 minutes to walk from the village (at 600m above sea level) to the top (at 950 m). The hiking path starts at Waypoint 1 and is well signposted.
If you decide to go up by bicycle or car, take the cement road at Waypoint 2. At Waypoint 3 turn left onto the dirt road. This road spirals up to the top. As both the cement road and the dirt road branche off several times, I recommend taking a look at Google Earth before you leave.
