Il gioco fu inventato dal matematico svizzero Eulero da Basilea (1707-1783), considerato il più importante matematico dell’Illuminismo. Secondo l'enigmista statunitense Will Shortz, il sudoku moderno fu realizzato dall’architetto statunitense Howard Garns e pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1979 all’interno di Dell Magazines con il titolo ‘Number Place’. ll gioco venne introdotto in Giappone dalla casa editrice Nikoli nel 1984 con il titolo ‘Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru’ (‘limitato ai numeri singoli’), successivamente abbreviato in ‘Sudoku’ prelevando soltanto i primi caratteri giapponesi del nome completo. Nell'ottobre del 2004 il sudoku venne importato in Gran Bretagna dal neozelandese Wayne Gould, per poi diffondersi in Europa e nel resto del mondo nel 2005.
Una istanza di Sudoku, detta anche griglia proposta o matrice incompleta, è una matrice Sudoku di aspetto 9x9 che presenta alcune celle bianche. Scopo del gioco è la trasformazione della griglia proposta in una matrice completa, cioè in una griglia priva di celle bianche e quindi tale che in ogni sua riga, colonna e regione 3x3 compaiano tutti i numeri da 1 a 9, ciascuno una sola volta. Secondo le regole del gioco, affinché una matrice incompleta sia considerata valida è necessario che la soluzione sia univoca, ovvero non devono sussistere due o più soluzioni differenti, nel qual caso il gioco viene considerato non valido.
Data la natura del gioco e l’enorme popolarità raggiunta in tutto il mondo, sono venute a crearsi col passare del tempo un’innumerevole quantità di varianti, tipicamente introdotte come novità in occasione degli annuali campionati mondiali. Nel 2012 si sono registrate oltre 200 varianti originali esistenti. Per tutti gli amanti di questo passatempo però, riviste specializzate contenenti griglie di sudoku da completare si possono acquistare in tutte le edicole!

The game was invented by the Swiss mathematician Euler of Basel (1707-1783), considered the most important mathematician of the Enlightenment. According to the American riddler Will Shortz, modern sudoku was invented by the American architect Howard Garns and published for the first time in 1979 in Dell Magazines with the name ‘Number Place’. The game was introduced in Japan by the publishing house Nikoli in 1984 with the name ‘Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru’ (‘only single digits’), later shortened to ‘Sudoku’ taking only the first Japanese characters of the full name. In October 2004, sudoku was imported to Great Britain by the New Zealander Waine Gould, only for it to then spread to Europe and the rest of the world in 2005.
A Sudoku instance, also called given grid or incomplete matrix, is a 9x9 Sudoku matrix that has some white cells. The aim of the game is to turn the given table into a complete matrix, that is a grid without white cells, so that in each row, column and 3x3 section the numbers between 1 and 9 appear, each only once. According to the rules of the game, for an incomplete matrix to be considered valid, it is necessary that the solution is unique, that is no two or more different solutions can exist, in which case the game is considered invalid.
Given the nature of the name and the huge popularity achieved around the world, a number of other variations has been devised over time, typically introduced as novelties in occasion of the annual world championship. As of 2012, the number of original variations exceeds the 200 typologies. For all lovers of this pastime, though, Sudoku magazines containing grids ready to be solved can be purchased at all newsagents!
