Geocache Description:

East of Fort Douglas. Nice, short hike with amazing views and possibilities for other more lengthy excursions, especialy Mt Van Cott to the NE, Mt Wire to the SE or The Living Room (Sometimes called The Furniture, etc) on it's flanks. The upper portions of Red Butte Canyon are closed to all human traffic most of the year. Other views of this canyon can be had from Freeze Creek Pass and Brigham Fork Pass, starting in the upper part of Emmigration Canyon and Pincrest Cayon respectively.

This is one of my favorite hiking areas and being close to the University and minutes from Salt Lake City make it a wonderful place for anything from short day hikes to a starting point for multi-day ridge line hikes varying from 10 to 20 miles or more. The cache is located only a short .68 miles from the Redbutte Canyon parking north of the arboritum.

The theme of this cache is OpenSource. I have placed:

  • about 15 Linux CDs (all Caldera CDs)
  • 1 FreeBSD cd
  • 1 March Linux Journal (new and slightly folded 8^)
  • 2 blank 80 minute CDR media
  • a notebook for recording your visit

I'd like to keep this cache theme in line with OpenSource and Free software oriented. In doing so, please leave only software who's licence would allow legal trading though this cache. For more information on OpenSource check out www.OpenSource.org Feel free to leave spiffs from OpenSource venders that may have been obtained at trade shows (penguins, BSD devils, stickers, etc.). If you'd like to try Linux or need a new distribution but don't have something to trade that is in line with the cache theme, feel free to take a CD anyway.

In order to avoid creating new trails, I would recommend that you follow the 4WD trail to the north of the parking at the Redbutte canyon gate. In doing so, you may pass a couple waypoints. A hill above the water tank at 40,46.327N 111,49.449W, and I recommend approching the cache from a point on a trail at 40,46.419N 111,49.338W to avoid climbing up a steep class 3/4 gully ascent with loose limestone which could prove dangerous and increase this cache's difficulty rating. Use caution as the down hill side of the cache is steep and could be dangerous.
