Geocache Description:

An easy find, however, quite a difficult cache to reach, is located at the top of Pigeon Islands Signal Peak.

This cache is located at the highest point of Pigeon Island, Signal Peak, and you can get a great view of the beautiful island of St Lucia. In history, this was used by many ages of the military as a perfect lookout across the sea to check for invaders incoming on ships.

Pigeon Island lies off the northwest coast of Saint Lucia and exhibits much of the same features as the mainland. The oldest volcanic rocks are predominatly basaltic, with andesites and andesite basalt conglomerates. The primary sedimentary rocks of the period are those composed of agglomerate ruff and tuffs. The Island contains some of the oldest rocks found on Saint Lucia, dating back to the Eocene age about 58 million years ago. A layer of igneous rock above sedimentary deposits that can be seen on the northern cliffs is an indication that the island might have turned over on itself at some time.

The earliest inhabitants of Pigeon Island were the Amerindians, at around 1000 AD. Archeoligists have found stones, shells and clay artefacts that date back to around that time. Later on, in 1762 the French governor surrendered Saint Lucia to Admiral Rodney but the following year the Treaty of Paris assigned the island once more to the French. Then, in 1778, war broke out again between the French and the English. In one of the most successful Naval and Military engagements the English defeated the French at the Battle of Cul de Sac and Saint Lucia once more became a Bristish stronghold. In 1779 Rodney established a naval base at Gros Islet bay, heavily fortifying Pigeon Island, which became an important observation site. This time was the first proper military base at Pigeon Island, and the remains still show on the now peaceful Landmark.
