About Merstone Station

Merstone railway station, was an intermediate station situated on the edge of Merstone village on the line from Newport to Sandown incorporated by the Isle of Wight (Newport Junction) Railway in 1868, opened in 1875 and closed 81 years later. In 1897 a new line opened from Merstone to provide an alternative route to the south-east corner of the island, running initially to St Lawrence and in 1900 to Ventnor West station. Located in the heart of a farming community, Merstone was snowed under during the harsh winter of 1947. The station building was demolished after closure, although the platform is still existent. Merstone station is now an access point onto National Cycle Route 23.Some extra

The station was known as Merstone Junction until 1.10.1911. When opened the station had a single platform but with the opening of the Newport, Godshill & St. Lawrence Railway in 1897 the station was rebuilt with an island platform.

The isolated position meant that the station never generated much passenger traffic and was at its busiest when passengers used the station to interchange between trains on the Sandown and Ventnor lines.

The station was originally provided with a pedestrian subway for access but this was prone to flooding so the Southern Railway replaced the subway with an access ramp. There was a small goods yard to one side of the island platform.

The booking office was located within the station house, facing out onto the level crossing. A small goods yard was located on the opposite side of the level crossing.
