History Lesson: Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church

The priests assigned to serve Flagstaff’s Catholic community in the 1920s rallied for a church to serve the Spanish-speaking people of the town. Hispanic parishioners were expected to contribute most of the $16,000 cost of construction. The Arizona Lumber and Timber Company deducted money from paychecks of Hispanic employees to pay for construction. Members of the Hispanic community also donated supplies and labor. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church opened in 1926 as the pride of those parishioners. The church’s completion, however, finalized the Catholic effort at social and racial segregation in Flagstaff.

Part of the Todos Unidos series of caches placed by the Arizona Historical Society in cooperation with the San Francisco de Asis Catholic parish and the City of Flagstaff, this cache is a well-disguised micro container. BYOP  Please make sure the container is well secured in its original location. Cache placed with the kind permission of San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church Parish.
