Geocache Description:

A relatively simple multi based on the two castles on the North End of Tresco. To find the cache you'll need to visit the ruined King Charles' Castle, built in around 1548 to defend against French Attack, and the less ruined Cromwell's Castle, built after the Parliamentary invasion in the Civil War. Hence the cache name!

~~~~~
So, to start with you need to visit Cromwell's Castle.
Cromwell's Castle is an artillery tower, built by Sir Robert Blake following the Parliamentary invasion of the Isles of Scilly in 1651. During the Civil War, the inhabitants of Scilly had been Royalist supporters and rebelled against Parliament in favour of Charles in 1648. Tresco became a base for Royalist privateers. In 1651 Parliament sent Robert Blake and a naval force to retake the island, which had been fortified by the Royalists. Having established control of the islands, between 1651 and 1652 Blake constructed Cromwell's Castle on Tresco, named after Oliver Cromwell, the Parliamentary leader. It was intended to protect the deep water entrance to New Grimsby harbour. In 1739, the War of Jenkins' Ear broke out between Britain and Spain, and the decision was taken to improve the defences at Cromwell Castle. A large gun-platform for a battery of six guns on the south-west side of the tower was constructed.
Head up to this gun platform and find the two cannons which face North. As shown below I have been known to indulge in some (imaginary I hasten to add) yacht shooting from here! Take a look at the plaque on the side of the cannon (it's the same plaque on both cannons) - the number of letters in the last word equals A
On this floor you will also find a noticeboard entitled 'Tower of Strength'. You will see that inside there were B floors of accomodation. On the key, the number of letters in the colour (now don't go all technical and say things like 'crimson' or 'magenta', it's a primary or secondary colour!) which denotes 'c.1740 or later' equals C
Now go inside but don't head up the wooden steps just yet. As you go in, to the left you'll see a window. Find some fairly prominent 'graffiti' or 'carving' on the wall near the window that says 'IM' followed by four numbers. The four numbers are 1D33.
NOW you can head up the stairs and go right to the top level where you get a nice view down the channel, just as 'Oliver's Army' would have had when manning the cannons. On the info board up here you'll see there would have been at least E men for each gun. While you're up here you may wish to collect the bit of information needed for my Tresco Life's a Beach cache.
Now make your way to King Charles' Castle up on the hill. A steep old climb but worth it for the views.
King Charles's Castle is a ruined artillery fort. Built between 1548 and 1551 to protect the islands from French attack, it would have held a battery of guns and an accompanying garrison, designed to prevent enemy vessels from entering the harbour. The castle is polygonal in design, constructed from granite stone, with the gun battery at the front, and a dining room, kitchen and living accommodation at the rear.
The castle's design was unsatisfactory, as its guns could not be angled so to fire down into the harbour, and its defences were considered vulnerable to attack. To mitigate this, an additional blockhouse was probably constructed below, closer to the water, but eventually a new fortification, the Star Castle, was built instead on the neighbouring island of St Mary's, which became the main fort on the islands. In the aftermath of the English Civil War, Scilly was held by the Royalist sympathisers of King Charles I, who gave the castle its current name. The islands were then attacked by a Parliamentary force led by Sir Robert Blake in 1651, who landed on Tresco but bypassed the fort as he took the island. Its Royalist defenders blew up parts of the castle as they left, and some of its stone has been used to build the newer Cromwell's Castle.
So, outside the castle you'll find an information board entitled 'An Island Strongpoint'. On the floorplan diagram, the number of times 'F' (just the letter F on its own, don't count if it appears in other word) appears equals, wait for it... F Before you move off you may like to collect the piece of information for PurplePenguin's 'Tresco Trail' multi.
Next find the board titled 'Living in the Fort' and looking at the picture, the number of men who are standing up (look carefully, there's one who's hiding!) equals G
To the right of the board is a large alcove in the wall, which actually used to be the oven! I never knew I was sticking my head in an oven when I've peered inside before now! Anyway, the number of small circular holes at the edge of the oven, on both walls, equals H.
Finally find the board entitled 'Working the Guns'. You'll see that there were originally five guns here, needing at least 1J men. Looking at the picture, the number of men who are wearing reddish brown shirts equals K.
By now you should have all the information you need to know that the final cache is at:
N49 57.[D+B][G-C][F+K] W006 21.[J-G][A-E-K][H+J]
Please rehide carefully and replace the rocks covering the cache container.
