[PT] A Gare do Oriente, também conhecida como Estação Ferroviária de Lisboa - Oriente, é uma das estações ferroviárias e rodoviárias mais importantes de Lisboa, e em Portugal. Projetada pelo arquiteto e engenheiro espanhol Santiago Calatrava, ficou concluída em 1998 para servir a Expo98.
Em 1994, já se previa que o traçado da Linha do Norte iria ser alterado, no âmbito do projecto de modernização, de forma a melhorar a inserção da futura estação de Oriente; esta interface, que devia ser construída nos terrenos destinados à Exposição de 1998, foi alvo de um concurso internacional.
A Gare do Oriente foi projectada pelo arquitecto Santiago Calatrava em 1995, tendo sido inaugurada no dia 19 de Maio de 1998, no âmbito da Exposição Mundial de 1998.
Era considerada, na altura da sua entrada em serviço, a maior estação intermodal em território nacional. Recebeu o Prémio Brunel em 7 de Outubro de 1998, na categoria de estações grandes construídas de origem.
[ENG] Gare do Oriente, or alternately, the Lisbon Oriente Station is one of the main Portuguese intermodal transport hubs, and is situated in the civil parish of Parque das Nações, in Lisbon.
In 1994, the station was proposed as part of the modernization of the Linha do Norte, a modification to the rail line to facilitate the future development of an Oriente station. The station was planned to occupy the lands once occupied by Apeadeiro dos Olivais, which was demolished in the 1990s in order to make way for the new station.
Bids for building the project on lands to be used for the 1998 Exposition were solicited internationally. The concept was originally designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in 1995, and built by Necso.
The station was inaugurated on 19 May 1998, as part of the celebrations marking the opening of the Expo98 world's fair. Oriente Station is one of the world's largest rail stations, with 75 million passengers per year, making it as busy as Grand Central Terminal in New York. At the time of its opening it was considered the largest intermodal station in Portugal, winning the Brunel Award on 7 October 1998, in the category of large new construction projects.
