Geocache Description:

TSUNAMI IN PHI PHI

In December of 2004, the world stopped to see the tragedy that had happened in the Indian Ocean. More than 200,000 people were killed in 14 affected countries, including Thailand.

It was the morning of December 26, a few days before the arrival of 2005, when people realized that the Phi Phi Sea had receded a lot. No one imagined that this would be a sign of a disaster that was about to happen. Many tourists were advancing along the sand in the area where there was water before, and some residents tried to pull their boats. Suddenly, a giant wave appeared and made thousands disappear.

Without understanding what was happening and no time to flee, people were swept along by the waves, as were boats, trees, chairs, and cement. One of the reasons the tragedy hit so many people was that there was no warning at that time to get people out of risk areas. So the giant waves arrived and caught everyone off guard.

The 2004 tsunami has changed one of the country's top tourist destinations. Before, on the Phi Phi Islands, we had big hotels and resorts. With the tragedy, little inns began to appear without much structure, but with time, better hotels appeared.

Anyone who is currently in Phi Phi, 13 years after the tragedy, for a moment even forgets that one of the greatest disasters of the beginning of this century happened. The small streets are hectic, full of lively young people, lots of loud music, bars, beach parties and a lush landscape.

After the tsunami in Phi Phi, several plates were scattered around the island warning of the escape route in case of emergency, even in hotels. On all sides, the sound cards and speakers remind us of the tragedy.

Evacuation Route

One of the sights of Phi Phi is the View Point, which has a beautiful view of the whole island, also serves as an escape route, being one of the highest points in the region.
