FSC-2017 Williams Pond

Cache Details:

Description:
Seaford’s beginnings trace back to the year 1608, when Captain John Smith surveyed the Chesapeake Bay. During that time period, early settlement along the banks of the Nanticoke River was slow to develop as there was much discord between the English settlers and the Nanticoke Indians. The first record of settlement in Seaford can be traced back to the year 1672, and by the year 1720, the Seaford waterfront had become alive with the oyster packing industry and the first roads were constructed.

As the oyster industry flourished, skip jacks brought oysters to port at Seaford. Here, the oysters were packed and loaded onto steamboats. Williams Pond played an important role in this thriving business. Records show that because Williams Pond was often frozen, it was not only a popular pond for ice skating, but it was used as a source for block ice. Ice was cut from Williams Pond and saved in an ice house. Ice tongs were then used to move the blocks of ice into the hold of the ships for the purpose of keeping the oysters cold so they would not spoil. The ice from Williams Pond continued to provide early refrigeration for the oyster industry, and by 1855, it began providing ice for Seaford’s growing agriculture needs which were shipped by its newly constructed railroad.
