The cache is hidden at the end of the new 1.2km pedestrian promenade. The walkway starts in town at the Port Vila Market House, goes along the seafront, past The Rossi restaurant, Fung Kuei duty free store and the Anchor Inn carpark and finishes at Fatumaru Bay Park next to Chantilly’s Hotel.
From this vantage point its possible to look across to Malapoa Point (in front) and looking left, back over Port Vila Harbour and Ifira Point. Its a nice place to watch a sunset.
Thank you to the New Zealand government for funding the rehabilitation and enhancement of the public space on Port Vila's waterfront. The work was finished in late 2017.
Fatumaru Bay is one of the most accessible beaches in town for locals. The objectives of the new work were to protect the coastline (which was badly damaged during Cyclone Pam in March 2015); enhance the existing beaches, and upgrade the playgrounds and picnic areas for people to enjoy.
The coral rock of Fatumaru Bay has no filter layers, meaning that over time the soil holding the coastal trees and sand from the beaches is gradually eroded. The coastal protection works were designed to minimise this erosion of soil and sand which may occur in storm conditions.
The park also features a number of new wooden sculptures/totems carved by local artists.
