[RO] Sânnicolau Mare este un oraş din judeţul Timiş, România şi cel mai vestic din ţară. Localizat în regiunea Banat, de-a lungul frontierei cu Serbia şi Ungaria, are o populaţie sub 12000 de locuitori. Lângă Sânnicolau Mare se află rămăşiţele Urbiei Morisena, un oraş antic, sediu al legiunilor romane şi un ducat medieval din Banat. După Tratatul de la Passarowitz (1718) până în 1918 Sânnicolau Mare (şi Banatul) au fost parte a monarhiei Austriece.
Sânnicolau Mare este cunoscut pentru Tezaurul din Sânnicolau Mare, o comoară de 23 de obiecte din aur, descoperite aici în anul 1799. Piesele sunt expuse în Muzeul Kunsthistorisches din Viena şi în Muzeul de Istorie din Sofia. Oraşul este deasemenea şi locul de naştere a lui Béla Bartók, un notabil compozitor maghiar din secolul XX. Oraşul se află la 64 kilometrii distanţă de Timişoara, fiind cel mai mare oraş din regiune şi cel mai vestic oras din România.
Începutul industriei, în localitate, apare, începând cu 1724, când se construieşte prima berărie de către Mathias Oexel. În 1894, Fabrica de Bere îşi începe activitatea, concurând pe pieţele marilor oraşe europene cu berea Pilsen, ce va dura până în anul 1912, când, este falimentată de Fabrica de Bere din Timişoara, iar în locul ei se instalează Fabrica de Salam (Korneli).
[EN] Sânnicolau Mare is a town in Timiș County, Romania and the westernmost of the country. Located in the Banat region, along the borders with Serbia and Hungary, it has a population of just under 12,000. Near Sânnicolau Mare there are the remains of Morisena, an ancient town, seat of Roman legions and of medieval dukes of Banat. After the Treaty of Passarowitz (1718) until 1918, Sânnicolau Mare (and the Banat) was part of the Austrian monarchy.
Sânnicolau Mare is known for the Treasure of Nagy Szent Miklos, a treasure of 23 gold objects discovered here in 1799. The pieces are on display in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the National Museum of History, Sofia. The town is also, the birthplace of Béla Bartók, the notable 20th-century Hungarian composer. The town is 64 kilometers away from Timişoara, the biggest city in the region and the most western town from Romania.
Early industry in this town started beginning in 1724, when it builds the first brewery by Mathias Oexel. In 1894, the brewery commences, competing in the markets of major European cities with Pilsen beer, functioned until the year 1912, when was broken by the brewery from Timişoara city, and in its place was opened a salami factory (Korneli).
